Starcraft:
Timeless. The only word that can sum up a game like Starcraft, and even then I think it's beyond words, but I'll do my best to describe it. Starcraft is essential to any RTS fan's collection, regardless of skill and preference of styles. Something's telling me that this is the best Real Time Strategy ever, I might just be correct, on with the review...
Gameplay:
Amazing. It came about during a time that is similar to when Doom and Wolfenstein were prominent for the FPS genre. Its two comparees are Age of Empires and Warcraft 2, not much competition at all if you ask me. While AOE 2 is one of the finer RTS', the original is not anything near great. As for Warcraft 2, it is a step up from the original, and it just still isn't any good, too damn bulky and it almost feels like you can command about 2 units at once(it's actually 6). Starcraft, to start, has 3 races from which you can choose: Zerg, filthy aliens, they rely on sheer numbers to over take the oposition; Protoss, futuristic aliens, sheer power and defense make them kick a lot of ass; and Terran, sort of filthy humans, not the best or the worst at anything, pretty bland unless you know what you're doing. Well you may be saying: "3 races? AOE had at least 8!" Well I don't think anyone could tell much a difference between those groups, aside from the bonuses they each had, which sucked anyway. Starcraft's races have very few similarities and accomodate for all your RTS needs, rushing, sieging, and assault.
Needless to say, I think 2 resources are enough, most games are getting into about 6, it's retarded and redundant. Simple is simple, I'm dumb so I like things that are easy to manage and such.
Graphics:
Okay, they suck I admit it! But it was made in 1994 so what do you expect? at least I can tell what's going on, and some of the unit art work is killer! And all of the cutscenes are really really well done, all of them are worth watching again. They really help advance the story line.
Sound:
Sort of campy music playing in the background, but it's nice and catchy. I think having that in my head helped me pass finals this year, who knows... The unit acknowledgements get old just like in every other game, but they're fun to say when you're just walking around, it's a good way to creep out others.
Replay:
Definetly a stength here. There's a map editor, replays of yours and other people's games, cool scenarios, campaigns, etc. I've had this game about 3 years, and it still doesn't get old. The expansion makes it all the better, buy the Battle Chest, trust me on this one!
Summary:
Gameplay - 98
Graphics - 60
Sound - 90
Replay - 100
Total - 97 (not an average)
