Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Return to Castle Wolfenstein:

This is sort of like seeing a big pool of water in the middle of the desert, then when you finally get to the pool, you find it is just a big pool of expired mayonaise. Built off of the "grand-daddy" of all shooters, this seemed like it would be game of the year. And in many was it could've been, maybe I wasn't playing it correctly.

Gameplay:
Honestly, I question whether I got a correct version of this game. I would play this game from health pack to health pack, ammo box to ammo box. The objective didn't mean anything to me, staying alive was the only thing that wasn't directly in front of me. This gameplay is inconspicuosly linear, sure there are secrets, but the objectives are always exactly where you'd expect them to be. The game is not bad all around for about 3/4 of the way through, then they introduce the super soldiers and shock troopers. These bastards will track you down and kill you in 3 shots, no questions asked. Well I did ask one question, "Why the hell am I still playing this?" I'd quicksave AT LEAST every 30 seconds, just because those filthy, no legged, sister marrying rejects would sneak up from out of nowhere and shock me to death. Definetly not very fun.

Graphics:
Ah the Quake 3 engine, so underused, but when it is used the results are "purty." The character models in this game are fantastic, so are most of the environments. My favorite enviroment is the German town where you have to hunt down officers, very, very well done. What are much less than fantastic are the underground and outdoors night environemnts. The brightness needs to be adjusted all the way to the top, and even then it looks like they shot most of the game through a glass of chocolate milk. I walked around with the sniper rifle that had a night vision scope on the entire time in these places. And even then I had to question who was shooting me.

Sound:
Annoying, all I was used to hearing was the yelling of a german guard and then the horrible thud of 30 bullets entering my body, and then my body hitting the ground with the same old death scream.

Replay:
There's team based multiplayer, which pisses me off. I hate everyone that plays online, and now I have to work with them, all they do is complain about how much everyone else sucks, then when there's someone better than them they always accuse them of cheating. The single player was barely worth playing through once, forget doing it again.
